The Grammys

Steve Raybine:

Blog #66:

The Grammys

One of my many goals in music was to either be nominated for or to win a Grammy award. Unfortunately, the older I get, the less likely this prestigious distinction will ever happen for me. Many years ago, I marveled at the talent that was nominated for Grammy awards, but today it is difficult for me to relate to many of the artists that have been selected--especially in the rock-related idioms.

I'm not trying to sound like sour grapes, but it is difficult to relate to artists' such as Lady Gaga and a gaggle of other rappers, etc. Today, it seems like there is such an emphasis on the artists' image; # of records sold; record label affiliation and good ol' name recognition. Certainly, there are some deserving artists that are being honored this evening, but tomorrow morning when I look at the list of winners, I expect to heave a sigh of sadness about many of those who won this great award. I can't even begin to address the issue of all the tremendous artists' that were not nominated or didn't win for one reason or another--it really is a source of great sadness to me.

Hopefully, at some point in the future, music acknowledgement of the highest order will return to the many talented musicians who truly deserve to be considered to be honored by their peers within the recording industry (NARAS--National Academy of the Recording Arts and Sciences). Until then, it's just too painful to watch what apparently is currently considered superlative music by the Grammy’s featured acts.

In summation: to all of you talented and gifted musicians that aren't being recognized for your talent, keep composing and performing and maybe one day, a grammy will be sitting on your mantle. Keep the faith...what else can any of us do?
